I constantly hear in my profession the great value of online research, and I agree that it is a tremendous tool. However, I was recently reminded of the irreplaceable value of being present when trying to understand something. I was recently out exploring the world of home remodeling/repair, and in spending time on sites and in homes I uncovered many insights I would never have thought to ask about or explore. In this picture, the way tools were stored on the site, the empty energy drink askew…all of them led to new questions and discussion. I wouldn’t have thought to ask, and they wouldn’t have known to tell me.
